They booked it first. When we went, they told we don’t accept your booking. Either go to some other hotel or pay some extra money to stay here. Worst experience. Do not ever book at this hotel. They wont hear you at all.

We spent 2 nights at this hotel at the beginning of November. Our agent organised a boat to take us to and from the hotel, so we approached along the Ganges. Certainly a nice way to arrive and much easier than walking for miles through the lanes. We were assisted with our luggage up the steps; there are a lot of them! And once you have arrived at reception, there are more stairs up to the rooms, so not suitable for anyone who struggles with stairs/mobility. We entered our room through a heavy door with a very heavy padlock! The room was large, the bed comfortable but maybe too firm for some. The bathroom was up a steep step and was more of a wet room! They provided soap, shampoo and moisturiser. A fridge, kettle and tea/coffee making facilities and a safe. There was a hairdryer in the bathroom. We had a balcony overlooking the Ganges, but it was way too hot and humid out there to spend any time as it was enclosed. There was air conditioning and a fan in the room. We had a TV but it never worked. They offered an a la carte vegetarian menu in their enclosed “roof top” restaurant. The food was very good and reasonably priced. The Indian breakfast was probably the best on our tour; they did offer a western option. Be prepared for the cows and stray dogs who sleep at nights on the steps up to the hotel. They are not a problem; you just have to negotiate your way around them! You'll either love or hate Varanasi. I loved it and found it very atmospheric. All the staff were very friendly and added to a memorable stay. You are right in the heart of old Varanasi in this hotel, overlooking the Ganges, on a ghat and just down from the cremation ghat, with everything going on right in front of you. A great place to stay. We would definitely return.

Worst hotel we have stayed in

I had come to Varanasi a few years earlier and thought it was an incredible city, especially the ghats. On that occasion I had stayed at another hotel on the ghat, and was very impressed with the high level of service I had received. Unfortunately that hotel was booked up. The East View was the best hotel available on the ghat, and promised excellent views, a good restaurant and a "deluxe" triple room. So I booked it. It was a decision I was to regret. We got an airport pickup. Then the driver announced that as it was a busy festival day (In fact this was correct; it was Dev Diwali, one of the busiest of the year) many of the roads had been blocked and we would have to walk to the hotel. The hotel sent a porter to carry our luggage, but we had to walk for over a mile to reach the hotel. We were met by Mr Vikram, the manager, who checked us in. It was immediately clear that the hotel was occupied by a large number of pilgrims, several to a room! We ascended three flights of rather steep stairs to our "suite" which turned out to be a room with a (barely) double bed. It was basically a mattress on a wooden plank; I have never slept on anything so hard. We asked for the third bed which turned out to be (yes you guessed it) a foldable plank with a mattress on top. The bathroom had a bar of used soap(!) and one towel. The floor was exceedingly slippery; our daughter slipped and fell quite hard on the marble floor. The safe did not work. One of the staff came up and couldn't operate it either; finally he gave us the emergency key to the safe. Dinner was good, though we had ordered only daal. Even that took over an hour to arrive. There was nothing cold to drink, not even cold water. We asked the manager to arrange a boat to take us to the Aarthi that evening and he promptly announced that it was impossible as it was so busy. Then we asked him to arrange a boat early next morning and he said he wasnt sure how easy that would be. So we simply went down to the river in the morning and found a boatman without any difficulty. None of us slept that night; in addition to the discomfort of sleeping on planks that served for beds, the AC kept making strange noises and we eventually had to turn it off, relying on just the fan. The next morning we went up for breakfast; we were served toast that had mould on it - so essentially no breakfast By this time we had had enough. We had booked for two nights but decided to move out and go elsewhere. We had paid in advance, but the hotel were unable to take card payment for the relatively small amount of incidental expenses. Avoid this hotel at all costs.

Excellent service, committed staff

We stayed here as part of a photography workshop group #photos_for_humanity_workshops in October 2019. We were 5 persons in all and came away very impressed by the commitment of the staff to ensuring that we had a good stay. They made us special meals to order, snacks on short notice, corrected issues as they came up, and were flexible and responsive right through our stay. The hotel’s location is excellent, being walking distance to most of the important ghats like Manikarnika etc. Its amenities can benefit with a little more investment and care, but the most memorable aspect of our stay was the people. Definitely recommended for an authentic Varanasi Ghats stay.

elegance in the thick of the real India

Monkeys came and hung from the bars (elegant, golden, and thick) of our windows. So that was why they were there! Out the gate to the right are steps leading to the river. (The place is best accessed by boat.) And an evening in a boat- take one with a motor- is a wonder. The burning fields are just to the North. Go out the hotel gates and turn right to enter the narrow streets of the temple district. This is a boutique hotel. Every inch aesthetically designed. It's not ostentatious at all, nor overtly luxurious. Elegant yet homey. The cooking is good. Get a room with a balcony towards the river. Varanassi represents a serious challenge to Western minds. I'd say this is the ideal place to puzzle it out from.
